Landscape
The Search for Magic
New Mexico, 1969
Magic happens when several elements in a landscape—the contours of the land, rocks, trees, grasses, clouds, birds, the shapes of civilization on a horizon, the presence of water—come together in a particularly harmonious arrangement. I often look for people within the tapestry of all that to add yet another layer of interest.
If I’m lucky, I’ll encounter rich, saturated light in rain or fog, or at dusk. Maybe a blast of brilliant sunlight glistening off a snowy surface. Sometimes, when things go right, it feels like magic.
